ABS: A composition containing three new strains of lactic acid bacteria is disclosed, which is beneficial in the treatment or control of constipation, diarrhoea and hepatitis, and enhances immune response and liver function. The strains used are Bifidobacterium bifidum 6-1, Lactobacillus acidophilus YIT 2001 and Streptococcus faecalis YIT 0027. A method of preparing the composition is provided, which includes the addition of a microbe-protecting medium comprising dried skimmed milk, lactulose, vitamin C, sodium glutamate, vitamin E, beta-cyclodextrin and starch. This medium enhances the viability of the beneficial bacteria in the composition in freeze-dried form over a long period of time.
