ABS: A packaging machine and method are described for articles that are easily breakable and low in volume density, such as potato chips, by increasing the volume density. Packages are made by clamping a tubularly formed bag-making film, placing articles in the bag while it is clamped and then shaking this batch of articles to increase the volume density. This can be repeated several times and, once the final batch is dropped into the film, the clamping is released and the bag is sealed.
