ABS: Basophilic cells play an important role in allergic reactions and have granules that contain various potent inflammatory mediators. In order to study the reported inhibition of degranulation in these cells by tea catechins, components of a polyphenol fraction of the Japanese oolong tea cultivar Benihomare were obtained by reverse-phase column chromatography. The components were assessed for their inhibitory effect on degranulation by determining the histamine released from human basophilic KU812 cells stimulated with a calcium ionophore. NMR spectroscopy confirmed that the compound responsible for inhibition was a methylated form of epigallocatechin gallate.
