ABS: The role and functions of folate and vitamin B12 in optimal nutrition are overviewed. The chemistry, absorption and biochemical functions of folic acid, folate and vitamin B12 are described. Dietary sources and metabolism are discussed. Conventional concepts of the clinical and biochemical deficiencies and suboptimal status of folate and vitamin B12 are examined. Biochemical risks and indicators are considered. The need to consider not only the folate or vitamin B12 status that causes signs and symptoms of deficiency but also the concept of increased risk of neural-tube defects, colorectal cancer, mental illness and orofacial clefts is discussed.
